Fall Cleanup Checklist for Loudoun County Homeowners
A good fall cleanup is the most important yard work of the year. What you do in October and November decides how your lawn, beds, and driveway look next spring.
Leaves left on the grass smother it. Clogged gutters overflow and freeze. Overgrown beds give pests a place to spend the winter. A few hours of work now saves a lot of repair in April.
Here's the checklist we use on fall cleanups across Purcellville, Leesburg, and Western Loudoun. Use it to do the work yourself, or to know what to ask for when you hire it out. (Wondering about timing? See our guide on when to schedule leaf removal in Loudoun County.)

The fall cleanup checklist
Lawn
-
Remove the leaves. A thick layer of leaves blocks sunlight and traps moisture, which can leave dead patches by spring.
-
Do a final mow. Cut a little shorter than usual on the last mow of the year so the grass doesn't mat down under snow.
-
Pick up sticks and fallen branches so they don't kill spots in the lawn or get hit by next year's first mow.
Flower beds
-
Clear out leaves and debris that have blown into beds.
-
Cut back spent perennials and pull out dead annuals.
-
Pull weeds before they drop seed for next year.
-
Refresh the edges so beds look clean all winter.
Shrubs and hedges
-
Light shaping only. Trim stray growth, but save heavy pruning for late winter. Cutting hard in fall can push new growth that freezes.
-
Remove dead or broken branches before snow and ice weigh them down.
Gutters and downspouts
-
Clean gutters after most leaves have fallen. Clogged gutters overflow, soak your foundation and can form ice dams.
-
Check downspouts to make sure water drains away from the house.
Drainage
-
Walk your yard after a heavy rain. Note where water pools or washes out soil. Fall is a good time to plan grading and drainage fixes before winter.
Gravel driveways
-
Fill potholes and regrade washouts before freezing and thawing make them worse.
-
Clear leaves off the gravel, since rotting leaves turn into mud and weeds.
What's different about Western Loudoun yards
A fall cleanup here isn't the same as in a suburban development. We see the same few challenges every year:
-
Clay soil. Much of Western Loudoun has heavy clay that holds water. Wet leaves sitting on clay turn lawns soggy and patchy, so getting them off matters even more.
-
Slopes and hillsides. On sloped lots around Round Hill, Hillsboro, and Bluemont, fall rains wash soil and mulch downhill. Check where runoff goes before winter.
-
Wooded lots and oaks. Oaks hold their leaves into December, so wooded properties often need a second pass late in the season.
-
Long gravel driveways. Fall is the last good chance to fix potholes and washouts before freezing weather, and snowplows make them worse.
-
Clearing brush and tidying beds removes some of the cover that deer hide in and makes it easier to spot damage to shrubs early.
Do it yourself or hire it out?
DIY makes sense if you have a small yard, a few trees, a single-story house, and a free weekend.
Hiring it out makes sense if:
-
You have lots of trees, a wooded edge, or a large lot.
-
Your gutters are on a second story.
-
You don't have a way to haul away a truckload of leaves and debris.
-
You'd rather spend your fall weekends doing something else.
One crew can handle the whole list in a few hours to a full day, including leaves, beds, shrubs, gutters, and driveway touch-ups, and haul everything away.
Quick answers
When should I schedule a fall cleanup? Mid-to-late November is best for most yards, after most leaves have dropped. Wooded lots often need two visits. See our leaf removal timing guide for details.

How long does a fall cleanup take? Most homes take a few hours to a full day, depending on yard size and how many trees you have.

Can I add gutter cleaning? Yes. We recommend pairing gutter cleaning with your final cleanup, after the leaves are down.

What happens to the leaves and debris? We haul it all away, so you're not left with piles or bags at the curb.
