Why mulch matters

A good layer of mulch holds moisture in the soil, keeps weeds down, protects roots from temperature swings and gives beds a finished look. We spread it to a consistent depth, usually 2 to 3 inches, and keep it pulled back from tree trunks and shrub stems. Mulch piled against trunks ("volcano mulching") traps moisture against the bark and can harm the plant.
