When Is the Best Time for Leaf Removal in Loudoun County?

When do leaves fall in Loudoun County?
Fall color in Loudoun usually peaks in late October to early November. For 2026, the fall foliage forecast reported by Northern Virginia Magazine puts peak color at:
-
Western Loudoun: starting around October 30
-
Purcellville: around November 1
-
Leesburg: around November 3
Peak color isn't the same as leaves on the ground. Most trees drop the bulk of their leaves in the two to three weeks after peak, so the heaviest leaf fall here lands in mid-November.
Not every tree is on the same schedule. Maples and tulip poplars tend to drop early. Oaks hold on the longest. Many keep a good share of their leaves into December. If your property has big oaks, which is common on the rural lots around Round Hill, Hillsboro, and Waterford, expect a second wave of leaves late in the season.
Why not just wait until spring?
A light scattering of leaves won't hurt your lawn, and mowing over them can even chop them into mulch. A thick layer left all winter is a different story:
It smothers the grass. Wet, matted leaves block sunlight and air, leaving thin or dead patches by spring.
It invites disease. Damp leaf piles under snow are the perfect setup for snow mold and other lawn diseases.
It hurts your fall lawn work. Fall is the best time to seed and feed cool-season lawns in Northern Virginia. That only works if the leaves are off the grass.
It clogs gutters and drains. Leaves wash into gutters, downspouts, and drainage areas, which can cause overflow and ice problems in winter.
Spring cleanup costs more. Leaves that sit all winter turn heavy and compacted, so they take longer to remove.
One Cleanup or two? Our recommended schedule
How many cleanups you need depends on how many trees you have.
A few trees (typical neighborhood yard): one full cleanup in mid-to-late November.
Several large trees or wooded edges: two cleanups, one in early November and one in early December.
Lots of oaks or a wooded lot: two cleanups plus a final pass. Early November, early December, and a quick pass after the oaks finish dropping.
Book early. Leaf removal is one of the busiest services of the year, and November schedules fill up fast. Booking in October makes it much easier to get the dates you want.

Tips for town leaf pickup and gutters
In Leesburg? The Town of Leesburg runs a seasonal bulk leaf collection for loose leaves raked to the curb, starting in October each year. Check the Town of Leesburg leaf collection page for this year's schedule. We can blow and rake your leaves to the curb so they're ready for pickup.
Outside town limits? Most of Western Loudoun doesn't have curbside leaf pickup. We can haul leaves away or mulch them on site, whichever works best for your property.
Don't forget the gutters. Schedule gutter cleaning after most leaves have fallen, usually late November or early December. Clean them too early, and they'll fill right back up. Pairing gutter cleaning with your final leaf cleanup saves you a second visit.
Quick answers
Is it OK to do leaf removal in October?
Yes, if leaves are already piling up, but expect more to fall. For most yards, one October visit and one late-November visit work well.
Can I just mow over my leaves?
For a light layer, yes. Mowing chops them into small pieces that break down into the lawn. Once leaves are thick enough to hide the grass, they need to be removed.
